What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the internal organs. Ultrasound exams do not use radiation (as used in x-rays, CT scans). For this reason ultrasound is particularly useful in pregnancy and for children.

Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive test that is used to diagnose a number of medical conditions.  Ultrasound enables the radiologist or radiographer the assess in real time the patients symptoms relative to the images of the underlying anatomy.  Additionally, ultrasound may be used to provide guidance for biopsies.

Doppler ultrasound is a special ultrasound technique that evaluates blood flow through blood vessels, including both arteries and veins in the abdomen, arms, legs and neck.  Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate:

  • blockages to blood flow (such as clots)
  • narrowing of vessels due to atherosclerosis which can predispose to stroke
  • tumors and congenital malformation
